"The four tracks on this EP gradually get darker and deeper, as if Pale Rider has been designing an escape hatch from the strictly roots style he’s been exploring on previous releases. Opening with 'Lickwood', it’s business as usual with a medium pace Pablo-esque melodica-driven dubstrumental and a fluttery keyboard riff. The same rhythm is picked up for 'Rewind', with dubbed horns, orthodox chopped keys and twirling guitar. The flip, 'Gunshot', is much darker, and could even be South London with its groaning bass and plaintive synth line, although eventually reggaefied keys enter to lighten the mood.Things really change on 'Forward', which would not be a surprise if released on Hessle Audio. Top-end percussion, splashes of reverb and a swaying bass throb – and that’s all.
